Back in May 2008, the Government of India kicked off the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship (NMMS) to tackle a big problem: kids dropping out of school after Class 8 because their families can’t afford it. Lots of students, especially from poorer backgrounds, just couldn’t keep going. NMMS steps in with cash to help these kids stay in school through Class 12. Here’s the lowdown on what it’s all about, who can apply, how to get it, and why it matters.
What’s NMMS Scholarship?
NMMS gives ₹12,000 a year (that’s ₹1,000 a month) to students from Class 9 to 12 who go to government, government-aided, or local body schools. It’s for families earning less than ₹3,50,000 a year, so it really targets folks who need the help. The goal? Hand out 100,000 scholarships every year to keep kids in school and push them to do well.
Eligibility
Not everyone qualifies, so here’s the deal:
- You gotta be moving from Class 8 to Class 9 to start, and keep passing to Class 10 and 12 without flunking.
- Score at least 60% in your Class 10 exams (55% if you’re SC/ST) to keep the scholarship.
- Your family’s income can’t be more than ₹3,50,000 a year.
- No go if you’re in Kendriya Vidyalayas or Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas, or if you’re getting another central government scholarship.
- Also, this isn’t for studying abroad or diploma courses.
How to Apply for NMMS Scholarship 2025
You apply through the National Scholarship Portal (NSP), and they’ve got this thing called One-Time Registration (OTR) you need first. Here’s how it works:
- Get Your OTR:
- Head to scholarships.gov.in.
- Click “Apply for One-Time Registration (OTR)” on the homepage.
- Agree to their rules, pop in your mobile number, and verify with an OTP.
- Do the eKYC thing, and boom—you’ll get a unique OTR number.
- Fill Out the NMMS Form:
- Log into NSP with your OTR.
- Find the “Apply for NMMSS Scholarship” button.
- Fill in all the details, upload your docs, and hit submit. Double check your stuff to avoid mess-ups.
Docs You Need
- 2 recent passport photos.
- Income certificate showing your family earns ≤ ₹3,50,000 a year.
- Caste certificate, if that applies.
- Disability certificate, if needed.
- Copy of your Class 7 or 8 mark sheet.
- Something to prove where you live (like Aadhaar).
How They Pick Winners
Each state or UT runs two tests to pick NMMS scholars:
- Mental Ability Test (MAT): 90 multiple-choice questions to test your brainpower—stuff like analogies, number series, and spotting patterns.
- Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT): Another 90 questions on science, social studies, and math from Class 7 and 8.
Both tests are 90 minutes long, and kids with disabilities get extra time. Your score on these decides if you make the cut.
Checking Your Results
Results show up on your state’s SCERT website (that’s State Council of Educational Research and Training). Here’s what to do:
- Go to your state’s SCERT site.
- Look for “NMMS Results” or something like that.
- Download the PDF and search for your name.

Getting the Cash
If you’re selected, you get ₹12,000 a year sent straight to your bank account through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). Open an account with State Bank of India or any public sector bank with online banking. Keep renewing your application on time, or they’ll stop the money.
Got a Problem? Here’s Help
If something goes wrong—like your application gets stuck or the money doesn’t show up—use NSP’s grievance system:
- Go to scholarships.gov.in and click “Grievance Registration” under “Public.”
- Pick your category (like “applicant”).
- Log in with your OTR, password, and captcha.
- File your complaint with details and any proof.
They won’t handle stuff like court cases or religious issues, though.
Why NMMS Matters
In 2022, NMMS gave out 100,000 scholarships across India. Uttar Pradesh got 15,143, Maharashtra 11,682, and West Bengal 7,250. That’s a ton of kids who stayed in school because of this help. It’s not just about money—it’s about giving kids a shot at a better future.
