If you’re a student from a minority community in India, there’s some good news. Both the Central Government and the State/UT governments run several scholarships to make sure money doesn’t become the reason you drop out of school or college. Whether you’re planning to study medicine, engineering, management, or any other professional course, there’s a fair chance you can get help.
Now, before we talk about state-wise schemes, let’s look at the main Central Government scholarship for minorities — the Merit-cum-Means Based Scholarship — which is kind of the backbone for higher studies support.
The Big One – Merit-cum-Means Based Scholarship
This is a Central Sector Scheme run by the Ministry of Minority Affairs. It’s open to students from six notified minority communities — Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, and Parsis.
Who can apply?
-
Anyone from these communities who scored at least 50% marks in their last exam.
-
Your family’s annual income should not be more than ₹2.5 lakh.
-
Only two kids from the same family can get it at a time.
What’s covered?
-
Course fee: Up to ₹20,000 a year (or the actual fee, whichever is less). If you get into one of the 85 top institutes like IITs, NITs, IIMs, AIIMS, NIFT, etc., your full course fee can be reimbursed.
-
Maintenance allowance: ₹1,000/month for hostellers, ₹500/month for day scholars (paid for 10 months).
Extra points to know:
-
30% of scholarships are reserved for girls (but if there aren’t enough girl applicants, boys can take those seats).
-
Selection is based on merit and income.
-
You have to apply online through the National Scholarship Portal – scholarships.gov.in.
